Architecture Foundation Stowaway on The Floating Cinema

Following The Architecture Foundation’s collaboration with UP Projects on the open international competition for the design of the Floating Cinema, the AF stowaway on the completed vessel for an afternoon of talks and screenings; on water, on the water.

Featuring a talk with designer Erkko Aarti, architect of The AF, Finnish Institute and London Wildlife Trust's forthcoming Viewpoint for the canal side Camley Street Natural Park (chaired by Susanna Pettersson, Director, The Finnish Institute in London); a conversation with Joe Morris, Director of Duggan Morris – architects of the Floating Cinema – on their adaptation of the barge (chaired by Moira Lascelles, Deputy Director, The Architecture Foundation); and a rolling short film programme exploring autonomous floating worlds, from Sealand to Seasteading, via Radio Caroline.

Talks are free but ticketed due to limited capacity, the film programme will be free to drop in, and refreshments will be available to buy throughout the afternoon. Join us canal side to celebrate the Floating Cinema over the course of the London Design Festival, and explore aquatic architectures.

The Sea is a Harsh Mistress (USA 2010, Dir. Jason Sussberg, 20 min.) | Using a mix of observational footage, interviews, archival and animated historical reconstruction, The Sea is a Harsh Mistress presents the world of The Seasteading Institute. The film examines how the myths and ideals that made America- entrepreneurship, manifest destiny, ingenuity and frontier expansion-don’t stop at her own borders. 

Sealand on Reporting London 
(UK 1983, Archival material, 14 min.) | Sealand On Reporting London 1983 is an archival television news broadcast about Sealand, a miniature nation established on a former World War II fortress island off the coast of Suffolk.
