Warsaw Under Construction II

The festival Warsaw Under Construction II takes the form of a multi-level research-project and exhibition, addressing various aspects of design, with a special focus on urban and spatial planning in the Polish capital. The programme features a retrospective exhibition of works by legendary, interdisciplinary architect Stanislaw Zamecznik, urban space installations by three young British practices (see below), tours and seminars devoted to issues such as participatory urban planning and appropriation of public space.

Warsaw is widely regarded as a city of unfriendly, overwhelming and under-designed public space. For that reason, it is crucial to think of intelligent and innovative ways of introducing pleasure into public space. As part of the AF's New Architects: Poland_UK exchange, three emerging British practices were asked to propose projects for public spaces in central Warsaw, incorporating nonvisual experience such as sound, smell and taste, challenging the present character of these sites and addressing the notion of pleasure.
