Real Architecture: Jean Nouvel presents Agbar Tower

Weds 25 May 2005 7.30pm

Jean Nouvel thinks of his building as a geyser, rather than a skyscraper. The 142 metre Agbar tower, the headquarters of Barcelona's water company, is the city's newest landmark, and an agent of regeneration of its northern districts. Its form could be called streamlined Gaudi, and is inspired, according to Jean Nouvel, by the shapes that water takes under pressure. Comparisons with London's 'Gherkin' are inevitable.
