Real Architecture: Amanda Levete presents Selfridges Birmingham

Weds 15 October 2003 7pm
  • Selfridges Birmingham by Future Systems
  • Selfridges Birmingham detail by Future Systems
  • Selfridges Birmingham cladding detail by Future Systems

Selfridges Birmingham was the architectural event of the year, the daring encounter of large-scale retail development with Future Systems' high design ambition. It was the largest fulfilment to date of Future Systems' research into the creative application of technology, and it brought sensuousness to the heart of the modern city. Bringing the sort of imagination that was usually confined to art galleries to the realm of hard commercial development, after Selfridges Birmingham Britain's cities would never be the same again.

Amanda Levete was invited to give an insight as to what it has been like to work with the man who has redefined shopping, Vittorio Radice.
