Commissioned by the AF and the Hayward Gallery for the Arts Council, On the Road was an architect's view of the art of engineering in the car age.

Alex de Rijke focused on the architecture and engineering of the road itself in a series of case studies, including Birmingham's Spaghetti Junction, Newport Transporter Bridge in Gwent, Humber Bridge and the Torpoint Floating bridge in Devon, which de Rijke photographed especially for the exhibition. Annotations were added to the photographs by engineer Michael Hadi.
