London in the 21st Century: New Visions for London

17 January 1996
  • Herbert Giradet
  • John Gummer MP

London is the mother of mega-cities. It creates most of Britain's wealth and contains one fifth of the country's population. It also consumes more energy than Denmark, Greece or Portugal and survives on a 19th century infrastructure of roads, railways and sewers. What did Londoners want London to be? What were the visions of London's future?

Participants included:

Rt Hon John Gummer MP (Secretary of State for the Environment)
Herbert Giradet (environmental expert)
Richard Rogers (Richard Rogers Partnership)
Michael Cassidy (Corporation of London)
Sylvie Pierce (London Borough of Tower Hamlets).

London in the 21st Century

A groundbreaking and influential series of public forum debates organised to give Londoners a voice in shaping the future of their city's built environment.
