2007 Award

The 2007 Next Generation Award (NGA) has been won by Jamie Fobert Architects, a practice renowned for its innovative and inspiring approach to residential and cultural projects – including the planned extension to Tate in St Ives and the award winning Anderson House. The two other finalists were DSDHA and Featherstone Associates.

Established by Pipers and The Architecture Foundation and now in its third year, the NGA aims to provide a platform for the UK brightest architects who, given the chance, could make an exceptional contribution to commercial architecture. This year the award is in association with the City of London; as a new element to this year’s award, all nine shortlisted and winning NGA architects from the last three years will be invited to develop design studies for a City fringe site owned by the City of London.  These designs will be developed and debated during a charrette and form the basis of an exhibition to take place at The Architecture Foundation’s Yard Gallery from 24 April – 5 May 2007.

Commercial buildings shape much of Britain’s landscape but so often can be bland and boring. The Next Generation Award supports the work of new architects who want to make an exceptional contribution to commercial architecture in the UK. As part of winning the NGA, Jamie Fobert Architects will be flown to Cannes and presented to the international property market at MIPIM (13-16 March 2007).

The practice will also be brought face to face with senior-level decision-makers from the property industry at MIPIM’s London Stand – from investors to end-users, local governments to international corporations – encouraging better understanding from both sides of the demands of successful and creative commercial design.

The jury said of the winning practice: “Jamie Fobert Architects has proved itself to be outstandingly skilful, dedicated and sensitive. They have worked mostly in residential and cultural projects, but their work in the retail sector, which has survived the pressure of that field, suggests they will have something to contribute to an increasingly intelligent commercial market.”

Jamie Fobert, Principal Architect at Jamie Fobert Architects, said on winning the NGA, “We have successfully demonstrated our ability to obtain planning permission for difficult sites, our technical competence in construction and we have created dynamic buildings using simple means. Our ambition is to bring these skills to an ever-wider commercial audience and we hope that winning the Next Generation Award will make this more achievable.”

Rowan Moore, Director of The Architecture Foundation, said: “The Architecture Foundation with Pipers created the Next Generation Award to help close the gaps between talented architects and ambitious clients. As the award develops, we are finding opportunities to connect the Next Generation architects with real building projects. As we build up a list of the best of shortlisted entrants from each year, we hope this will serve as an invaluable resource for those wishing to make the best of the talent available in British architecture.”

Nick McKeogh of Pipers, who welcomes the NGA back to the London Stand at MIPIM, commented: “Pipers is delighted to use this unique opportunity to showcase the best of British talent to the commercial property sector that gathers at the London Stand at MIPIM.”

The jury looked for a coherent and imaginative approach to design, potential to work on large commercial projects and the ability to deliver projects on time and to budget. The Next Generation Award 2007 jury was chaired by Rowan Moore, Director of The Architecture Foundation, and included: Simon Allford, AHMM; Amanda Baillieu, Editor, Building Design; Jeremy Gardner, City of London; Sean Griffiths, FAT (2006 winner); Simon Harris, Simon Harris & Co.; Nigel Hugill, Lend Lease Europe; and Nick McKeogh, Director, Pipers.
