2005 Award The Mayor of London Ken Livingstone announced de Rijke Marsh Morgan as winner of the Next Generation Award on The London Stand at MIPIM, the annual international real estate forum in Cannes, on 9 March 2005. The award recognises architects who can bring new thinking to commercial architecture. Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, announcing the winners, said, It is very exciting to see the new breed of up and coming architects brought to MIPIM by the Next Generation Award. de Rijke Marsh Morgan could bring a refreshing new approach to the design of commercial buildings and challenge our existing expectations for commercial architecture. Launched in November 2004, the award aims to provide a platform for architects who, given the chance, could make an exceptional contribution to commercial architecture in the UK. The winning practice was selected by a jury from a shortlist of 3 of the brightest young UK architectural practices, which also included 6a Architects and S333. With 9 years experience of practice, dRMM boasts an exceptional record in award-winning architecture, responding creatively to demanding briefs whether confronted by commercially-driven or difficult sites. The strength of dRMMs work, particularly in the fields of school and residential design, reflects the practices ability to bring valuable new thinking to the complexities of designing commercial buildings in London and the UK. Each of the practices, all of whom have been recognised for the strength of their work in particular fields, have been given the opportunity usually restricted to more established practices, to present their work to leading developers at a dedicated space at the London Stand at MIPIM. De Rijke Marsh Morgan, as winner of the Next Generation Award were also awarded an individual consultation with the chief executive of leading developer Argent Group Plc, Roger Madelin. Rowan Moore, director of The Architecture Foundation and chair of the jury, said, dRMM takes each project as it comes, whether it is a school, a housing block or a restaurant, and gets the most out of it, through the creative use of materials and strategic thinking. The practice refuses to accept that being serious means being boring or average. This combination of openness and commitment makes dRMM an exciting prospect for the design of commercial buildings.
