PHASE 1 CORE STRATEGY: THE NEW CENTRAL ACTIVITY ROUTE
What currently feels wrong with the space is that all activity is pushed to its edges, or excluded entirely. The grass does not invite being sat on and the extent of the shading from the mature trees means that it is patchy in most places.
We therefore favour taking the bold and possibly controversial step of removing all the existing grass, together with most of the recently planted trees, and creating a new activity route paved in brick-bonded bands of York stone, along the full length of the Phase 1 site.
The centre of the new route would accommodate a range of simple and unique markers such as a cluster of circular concrete ping-pong tables
The ‘prow’: the eastern end is currently the most depressing and threatening part of the site. We propose a defined termination to the street by ramping up the currently unused eastern triangle creating an elevated, safe and well-lit rendezvous point.
