Charlie Whitaker & Amelia Lam

Our main goal was to enhance legibility. We believe that careful management of views - especially views at night - is essential to the safety and enjoyment of public spaces. We studied movement patterns over a 24 hour period and then considered these in the context of existing spatial and visual obstacles. It seemed to us that the dense tree planting, although attractive, was creating a problem. We proposed to remove some trees and substitute a dense lighting array that used a tension structure to minimise clutter from ground-bearing verticals: this was combined with soft-edged, reflective and highly contrasting paving / seating elements designed for ease of movement
