Block Architecture

BLOCK ARCHITECTURE / ANY OLD STREET
The basis of our design approach to the project is essentially two-fold. To give a sense of collective identity and ownership of the site to residents whilst at the same time inspiring a sense of familiarity and affection for those that pass through and use it.

Strips & Slots
The topography of the ground surface became key to the physical proposal. This involved the idea of dividing the site into sections of varying widths across it’s length, defined by slots between each strip. The strips run perpendicular to Old Street, allowing for a meandering route through the site and short-cuts across and through the site. Across the length of the site some of the strips gently slope upwards to form an undulating landscape of varying materials of grass, planting and mulch (in an attempt to define dog walking areas apart from grass sitting areas). Within this topography, we have proposed various elements including types of soft landscaping and planting beds, York stone (recycled from the existing ground surface) and reconstituted stone paving, the concept of the Kiosk, a field of light poles and random summer water walls. We have also proposed an area which could be used as an occasional outdoor film screening space, located in the open area in front of the Post Office.
