Having both lived and worked on or near to Old Street for many years, this design team are especially sensitive to its particular pleasures, possibilities and problems. It is lively, busy, varied, dirty, noisy and ever changing. It ranges from the new media and creative industries business district at the Clerkenwell end, to one of London’s liveliest night leisure areas at the
Hoxton end. Along its length are a number of well established if under resourced housing estates.
Old Street is a contested public space. It is a place shared and shaped by many individuals, groups,
forces and communities – in sometimes complimentary, and sometimes competing modes.These include: long term local estate residents, mothers and children, young, professional local residents, local office workers, local shop workers, school children, local businesses, real estate developers, shoppers, lunchers, tramps, adolescents…
