The introduction of the congestion charging zone now provides an opportunity for a comprehensive reappraisal of Old Streets role within London. Entry into Old Street should be celebrated as a key gateway into the capital.

The surface treatments should unify the space without overtly strong definition of the carriageway. The existing mature trees will be retained and others added, reinforcing the gateway into Old Street.

A consistent kerb alignment complemented by a simple paved ground plane and regular street lighting will link together the contrasting spaces of St Lukes and the gateway plaza, where extravagant artistic interventions could take place.
