Four of London's best young architectural practices discuss their thoughts and work in the popular, informal setting of BDP. Chaired by a range of distinguished journalists and professionals, the series showcases those shaping the future in building design.

The House That Herman Built

What kind of house does a man who has lived in a 6' x 9' prison cell for over 35 years dream of? An exhibition by Jackie Sumell & Herman Wallace. Organised by RCA MA Curating Contemporary Art Students in collaboration with The Architecture Foundation.

Next Generation Architects / Pipers Award

Plasma Studio has been announced in MIPIM as the winner of the 2008 Next Generation Architects / Pipers Award. A directory of architects has been published and an online version will follow shortly. Previous winners include Jamie Fobert Architects, FAT and de Rijke Marsh Morgan.

European Prize for Urban Public Space

The AF sits on the jury of this biennial competition which aims to recognise and promote activities that improve public spaces and the quality of life in cities. The winner has been announced as Barking Town Square by muf architecture/art, adjacent to the Barking Town Centre development bty AHMM.

Garden House

The Architecture Foundation curates the architecture pages for bi-annual fashion bible GQ Style. In the current issue we present a creative response to house design with a new concept Garden House by Finn Williams. We are also asking some of the most inspiring architects, artists, critics and designers working today how they want to be living, including Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Elmgreen and Dragset, and Fritz Haeg, accompanied by an essay by Kieran Long.
Out now in GQ Style.


How Places Work

How Places Work is a joint CABE and Architecture Centre Network initiative in which the AF is working with schools across London to encourage young people to become more aware of architecture and the effect it has on everyone’s day to day lives.

 


 

DESIGN COMPETITIONS

Architecture Rocks

Building Design and The AF are hosting the closing party of the London Festival of Architecture on 18 July. Preview the finalists, who will be joined on the night by DJs from St Etienne, at BD Online.

The Lift

Coming out of a design competition co-organised by the AF, The Lift, a mobile festival venue designed by AOC architects, will be the focal point of Lift Festival 2008 touring Stratford and Southbank Centre this summer.

Robin Hood Gardens

Building Design and The AF joined forces to create an international ideas competition for Robin Hood Gardens, the celebrated and controversial housing development by Alison and Peter Smithson in east London.

Carmody Groarke has been announced as the architect for British Land's new Regent's Place pavilion.

Athletes Village, Stratford City

The AF has managed, on behalf of Lend Lease, the selection process for the architects for the Athletes Village in Stratford City, a new neighbourhood of London which will house the teams for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The Jury for the process has chosen 47 practices from an international entry of 434 to form a panel from which practices will be selected for individual commissions.

Promenade of Light

The Promenade of Light in Old Street has been shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Buildings.

The design by Tonkin Liu was selected in the AF's Any Old Street? competition. The design proposals from the competition can be seen here.


 

LONDON FESTIVAL OF ARCHITECTURE

The London Festival of Architecture 2008 is now undeway. Running from 20 June - 20 July it includes street installations, exhibitions, guided walks, cycle rides, boat tours of the city's river and canals, parties, design workshops and debates in five hub areas across the city.

The AF is curating the Southwark & South Bank hub from 9 - 13 July. Headline projects include:

Southwark Lido
9-13 July
A temporary installation by French architectural collective EXYZT and Sara Muzio providing a meeting and bathing space for the residents of Southwark, and the general public alike.

Friday Late on the South Bank
11 July
Institutions, galleries and public spaces along the river will come alive on 11 July with events from the Hayward Gallery’s 40th anniversary celebrations to the Design Museum.

Urban Street Hunt
12 July
A photographic treasure hunt allowing the public to discover the hub's streets and hidden spaces, by Jonathan Legge, Europa and Shoot Experience.

London South Central
9-20 July
Exhibition of future of architecture in central London, south of the river, at the office of Allies and Morrison.

Temporary Eyesore
20 June - 20 August
An installation by artist Scott King on the construction hoardings.

Closet Gallery
9 July - 13 September
A new temporary project space conceived by artist Simon Fujiwara.
